Missions
Welcome Table:
Jesus told us to feed the hungry. In response, several churches, including First United Methodist Church, have launched Welcome Table, a free community meal every Monday evening. Drive-thru and pick up your meal from 5:00-6:00 pm. Enter from the back of the church (Toms Street) and follow the arrows.
Habitat for Humanity:
Habitat is blessed to have deep roots within our church. In 1987, through the vision and actions of First Church members Rev. Vernon Stutzman and Dr. Ernest Yelton, Rutherford County's Habitat was created. The following year, a lot was cleared, a foundation was laid, walls were raised, and a roof was placed on the first house. And our first Habitat family realized the dream of homeownership - a dream that would have been unattainable for them if not for the loving and caring nature of people like Vernon and Doc.
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to providing safe, affordable housing to low-income families. Rutherford County’s Habitat affiliate was created in 1987. Habitat works in partnership with low-income families, sponsors, and communities to build affordable housing. Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner, or partner, families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and are financed with affordable loans. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are used to build more Habitat houses.
The families who partner with Habitat are low-income families having a gross income of 30% - 80% of Rutherford County’s median family income. They must also be living in substandard or overcrowded housing, unsafe housing, and/or pay more than 30% of their family’s income for housing.
After an extensive qualification process, partner families are chosen to be Habitat homeowners and the construction of their home begins soon afterward. Habitat is not a giveaway program. Houses are built according to the size of the family.
In addition to a down payment and monthly mortgage payments, homeowners must invest 300 sweat equity hours building their own Habitat house as well as the houses of other partner families. They must also attend educational classes regarding financial stability and homeownership.
Habitat is a small organization in our county that operates with 13 employees. There are (2) ReStores, the largest location, that sells building supplies, furniture and home goods at 686 W Main St. and a clothing center at 269 W Main St. both in Forest City.
The mission of Rutherford County Habitat is to bring God’s people together, to build homes, community and hope. Habitat’s ministry is based on the conviction that to follow the teaching of Jesus Christ, we must reflect the love of Christ in our own lives by loving and caring for one another. Our love must not be just words; it must be a love which demonstrates Faith in Action!! With continued support from churches like ours, Habitat will continue to spread God’s love and to care for the underserved in our community.
